Smart treadmill: what to check before you connect

Three functions to tell apart

Start by asking what the connection actually does. A product page may highlight Bluetooth for speakers or the manufacturer’s own app without saying whether a third-party app can read your running data.

• Media connection: the treadmill plays audio or talks to a screen.
• Data sharing: an app can receive some measurements, such as speed.
• Control: an app can send settings to equipment that accepts them.

What is FTMS for?

FTMS stands for Fitness Machine Service. This Bluetooth specification defines a service for fitness equipment. Its presence is a more precise clue than the word “smart,” but you still need to check what the treadmill and the app each support.

Compatibility depends on both sides. A protocol supported by the hardware isn’t enough if the app doesn’t use it, or if the function you want isn’t available. Look for confirmation for your exact model and use.

Do you need Bluetooth for Runkyz?

The current version of Runkyz works in manual mode. You enter the treadmill’s limits in the game, choose a route and copy the targets onto the console. Sensor connection and Bluetooth control are not available yet.

So you don’t need to buy a smart treadmill to try it. On the other hand, the app doesn’t check your machine’s real settings: the information it shows comes from the game session.

Setting up at home

Plan for a computer to run the app and a screen position you can read while running. The treadmill must stay within reach: a virtual landscape should never make the console harder to use. Enter the maximum speed and incline in the game from the manufacturer’s information.

Runkyz shows speed in km/h. If your console displays mph, check whether it can switch units, or convert as you go (10 km/h is about 6.2 mph). An adjustable incline lets you follow more of the terrain; if your machine is limited, enter its real limits instead of copying someone else’s setup. And don’t infer mobile support or device compatibility from a Bluetooth logo alone.

What if you use several apps?

List the functions you expect from each one: speed reading, extra sensor, incline control, operating system. For example, Zwift publishes a guide to checking your equipment and the ways it can receive your speed. That compatibility is not a certification for Runkyz.

Before buying, get written confirmation from the seller or manufacturer about the model and the app you care about. It will be more useful than a general claim like “works with fitness apps.”
