Decide what the session is for
A session can help you get back into the habit, spend time at a comfortable intensity or work on a specific instruction from your plan. Write that goal down before you touch the console: it will help you choose the route and avoid turning every run into a test.
Note your starting point too: current activity, how long you can run without stopping, the time available and your experience on a treadmill. A beginner running plan and race preparation don’t answer the same need.
Which treadmill plan for beginners?
A progressive plan gives structure when you don’t know where to start. The NHS Couch to 5K program alternates walking and running at first, schedules rest days between runs and can be followed on a treadmill. You can stretch its progression to suit you.
Use the full plan for its sessions: a list of speeds is no substitute for its progression. If you have health concerns before getting back into exercise, ask a health professional. For a performance goal, a coach can adapt the plan to your situation.

Cardio training: look beyond speed
The same speed does not mean the same effort for two people. The CDC suggests the talk test as a guide: at moderate intensity you can talk but not sing; at vigorous intensity you can only say a few words before pausing for breath.
To compare sessions, note how you felt alongside duration, speed and incline. That context gives the numbers meaning. A result in the game is neither a heart-rate measurement nor a medical assessment.

A simple outline for your session
Plan the session before you start. Duration and settings come from your plan or your usual routine. This outline organizes your attention; it doesn’t prescribe the same intensity for everyone.
- A gradual start to get used to the belt.
- A main block with one clear goal: pace, duration or terrain.
- A cool-down that suits the session.
- A note afterward: what felt comfortable, what felt hard, what to adjust.
How do you see progress?
Repeat a reference session from time to time, in comparable conditions. Look at consistency, ease and your ability to follow the plan. If you change the route, incline and duration at the same time, the comparison tells you less.
Runkyz adds a route, a pacer and session records to make those benchmarks more visible. It does not yet offer a personalized training calendar or import interval workout files. Use it to support your routine, and keep your plan alongside if you follow one.
